large and in charge

Camera and battery have reunited- so you may now observe my 33.5 week belly. It juts right out there, doesn't it?

Ignore my lackluster face. I was thinking about how much I wanted to sit back down.

ahhaa, this picture just makes me giggle. You know how when people pretend to be pregnant and put a basketball under their shirt? And it looks ridiculous? Well this looks ridiculous. But it's real.

But I do love having these babies to grow. See my little love pat? Yeah, that's love.

Ah yes, I have a new question- Is gentle detergent necessary for baby clothes? Should I just use my normal stuff and see how the boys react, then buy some different detergent if it's irritating?

Fun pregger belly developments! They are thus:
  • I've never heard of this before: Every so often, I'll hear a little click from my belly. Kind of like the pop from a very small bubble of bubble wrap. It's usually accompanied by a kick and comes from the top of the belly curve (though how well can I localize that, really?). It now happens about 5 times a day. Anyone have an explanation?
  • I have ITCHINESS like the dickens. I don't know who or what the dickens are but my stomach skin just cannot be soothed. I wake up scratching all the time.
  • You can find us often writing down times as I start counting braxton hicks contractions to see if they're in a pattern. The doctor said to call if they're in a pattern for 2-3 hours. Well, last weekend I'd get them 3-6 minutes apart for an hour and a half and then they'd go on a break for 20 minutes. So we never called. Perhaps we should have? I tell you, that was fun for Sean while he studied for finals. At least it motivated him to pick out some clothes for the hospital bag.
  • Not really new, but the baby ninjas are constantly getting more active. Here's a quick example:

(Man, could I sound more lethargic and dopey?) Oh babies, you two just have too much fun.

  1. Wow - you are a basketball lady! If it makes you feel better, I've theorized that women who have shorter torsos have less room for belly expansion - so a pregnant belly really does pop out.

Plus, there's the whole twins reason. :)

Loved the video! So cool to see them rippling along!
On the itchiness thing - I don't think there's any escaping it. I've heard Vitamin E oil helps. I did want to tell you that with Noah, I remember switching to a different lotion and I felt itchy from head to toe. It was so bad I called my doctor about it. Then I remembered I switched lotions and as soon as I got home and took a shower and went back to my old lotion, I felt instantly better. So... if you've switched lotions lately...go back to your old standby!

Lots of braxton-hicks with me too. I did lots of counting until the day they were born - with the boys it was right on time! You really need to start paying attention when you can feel discomfort with them. My real labor always started with back labor and then you notice the contractions getting more intense as time goes by. Discomfort is the key, here, I think! (Well, the discomfort coming specifically from contractions - not the "I'm tired of being pregnant, can we speed this up?" discomfort.)

P.S. I'm surprised you're not on bed rest yet! I think it helps to have your multiples with the first pregnancy - your body can handle it better and will be able to recover better.

Keep resting as much as you can! Love you!

  2. I'd go with the gentle detergent just to be safe. You'll end up using detergent either way, so why not buy the gentle stuff? If they are little/early (which I doubt they will be early--keep it up, you're doing great!) then they'll be more sensitive anyway. Once you go through one bottle then you can probably go back to the regular stuff.

And I love your belly. Really. It DOES look like a basketball, in a very good way (meaning, you're so stinkin' skinny everywhere else). Keep up the good work growing those baby ninjas!

  3. Oh, Katie, how is your poor back?! I showed Mike that 2nd picture and said, "doesn't it look like she has a basketball in there?!" and then went on to read below that is exactly what you said :-). You are my idol! I've got to tell you, the feeling when a baby comes out is such a relief of pressure, and I so looked forward to that with Addie and Preston knowing what it would be like and it is going to be doubley good for you :-)! As far as the baby detergent, I'm sure it's not necessary, but I'm a sucker and always get one thing of it. When it's gone I switch over to regular stuff, but I'm sure it really doesn't make a difference for most babies...completely up to you! Hang in there :-)!

  5. So I've showed this post to like 5 of my friends. We're all amazed at what a pregnant lady that's carrying twins looks like! And everyone thinks the video is super awesome.

  6. You look so cute! I'm so excited for you guys! We did end up getting Dreft powder... I had thought the same thing about it, but I do think that it's nice to know it's not as harsh. The only thing is, if you use dryer sheets... then you're still getting fragrance! I don't know, it did make me feel better.

I had major itching like you're describing it right around that point in pregnancy too. It's the worst! I pretty much just slathered a thick layer of Eucerin cream (not lotion) on my belly. It was gross at first, and didn't totally relieve the itch, but it helped. You could probably also use petroleum jelly or some other, thick-ish ointment-type thing. It's kind of a pain to apply it very thick, but it's worth it! I kept the tub next to the bed so I could re-apply at night if I needed to, it was so bad. I hope it goes away soon for you - I don't remember it lasting very long.

  7. Your belly does look like a basketball. Are you faking? I can't believe how little you still are with this giant belly! You're so cute.

The video of the ninja boys was so cool to see! Holy cow, you must feel like there's a circus underneath your shirt! At least you know that they're doing well in there!

Good luck with the itchiness, that sounds miserable. Is it from your skin stretching?

  8. Cute video! What a cute round belly! (Hope you don't hate it when people say that!) You look great! How are you sleeping at nights? And on the detergent, we are still just using what we used before Kaylee came and she is fine so far (She's two months old now!). I just keep a close eye on her little skin.

  9. Oh, I forgot the question about detergent. Having had three babies with ezcema - I found it best to switch to fragrance free detergent and dryer sheets (the dryer sheets can be the bigger culprit - so do be sure to use fragrance free there). I know Tide and All make completely fragrance and dye free stuff. I never did use Dreft. Just did All Free or Tide Free and then I can wash everyone's clothes at once.

On the subject of laundry - I also found our old family standby of Fels Naptha to be great at removing baby stains (spit up and poop). :)

  10. You are doing so well. I am amazed to see how cute your tummy is!! I swear I was just a big ol blimp with my boys. You are doing awesome. I loved the video and it made me wish I had taken one way back when. Super Cute!!

  12. Oh I love reading your blog posts! I was paranoid about detergent at first but nothing has bothered Ty's skin--and it's so so soft! Even double dryer sheets. I think excema is related to allergies--at least I think that's what my sister's doc said when they found out he had food allergies (which take awhile to figure out). But every baby is different. :) Oh and the pop sound/feel--that's how I described what happened when I was laying in bed and then my water broke. So watch out~they'll kick their way out!

  13. Nice belly! Are you sure it's not a basketball?! You look cute, and will soon be a mommy! Good luck with those last couple of weeks!

  14. Katie, I don't know if you remember me from the BYU married ward from a year ago, but heck I have been following your blog since you got pregnant but I never comment... haha

BUT I have to comment now about the popping noise! This happened during my pregnancy as well, just when Ava was kicking and moving around. It began to happen more often near the end. I even once called my OB about it because it worried me. They said it is sometimes believed to be joints or ligaments popping but others believe its nothing.

Well the day Ava was born after all the craziness died down and we were just all sitting there quietly, I picked up Ava and her shoulder popped! And popped often for the next few weeks. I am sure that's what I was hearing while I was pregnant.

:) I may be crazy but that's what happened with us

  15. Loved the video!

I did Dreft with Hazel and it turned out to be a good thing. She has super sensitive skin and breaks out in a rash with normal stuff. I now use dye- and fragrance-free detergent for all of our clothes, bedding and towels(it's cheeper than Dreft). I've never had a problem with the dryer sheets.
