Panel of Experts: High Chairs

You all are the most wonderful readers. I can't believe how kind you all are to share your wisdom. The boys had been progressing well in their night sleep but then a couple weeks ago they started waking up every couple hours. So something had to give. We're using your tips and guidance to help them sleep a bit better. Last night they were pretty good, so hopefully progress is being made.

New question! This one should be pretty straight forward. High Chairs. What should we look for in a high chair? We especially would like to know if we should get:

A) a true, stand-alone high chair (like this or this)
Positives: won't take up two kitchen chairs, seems to be highly portable
Negatives: leaves a couple of big footprints

-or-

B) a chair that sits in a normal kitchen chair (like this)
Positives: saves space, a bit cheaper, converts to booster seat later
Negatives: takes up two kitchen chairs, may be a little harder to clean

So what do you think? Do any of you have a favorite high chair you'd recommend? Is there any more to consider that I'm haven't mentioned?

  1. We got a stand along high chair. But we have a small space and so I got one that folds up and can be tucked away if need be. But because of our small space we got a table that is counter hight and have taller stools for it...and so we don't really have a chair to really put a high chair in a kitchen chair. We ended up get a portable chair though for about $20to take camping or for traveling but it will also be his booster seat when he gets older...and when we have a bigger house with better chairs to put it in.

Really what you want to do is look at what space you have. Are you bent on saving floor space? Or do you want to save the chair space? I personally didn't want a chair one because if we had guest it would be one less chair for a person to sit in. I'd say if you go with a stand alone chair make sure you get one that reclines (good for when they are still trying to sit on their own and for when they fall asleep in the chair), and get one that the height can be adjusted. That way you can adjust it to the height you are sitting at and you can be more comfortable feed your kids. If you get a chair one then I would think that you couldn't recline it that much and the height is fixed (more to your benefit). Any way you look at it you just need to get one that has all the features you need/want. Oh, if you get a stand alone one, see if you can get one that has a basket under the chair...we got one and I LOVE IT!!! We put all the bibs there so they are all in one place and easy to get to.

  2. I have always personally thought the big high chairs are pretty ugly, but I had no idea you could use the booster chairs like a high chair when we had Ella, so I got a wood high chair with a plastic tray (which there was only one version of at the time). The high chair has served us well, but if I could do it over I think I would do the booster version...especially if I needed two at the same time. We ended up buying a booster for the kitchen table anyway when Ella was ready to sit at the table (now Addie uses it), so she would be tall enough to reach and eat comfortably. I vote for the boosters...you'll need them later anyway (the other benefit is you can have them sit on the floor in other rooms to eat and contain their mess if needed...I bring mine upstairs for Preston to sit in for his afternoon snack when I am cleaning a room up here, etc.

  3. (so, if you do have company and need the chairs, you could stick the boosters on the floor for the kiddos to eat in)

  4. Sounds like what do YOU want? I have no experience yet with high chairs, but this sounds like a personal preference type thing. We're going to do the space saver chair that goes on a kitchen chair, but if I had a bigger house I'd probably do the high chair. They just take up too much room for us right now. I figure if we have company and need all our kitchen chairs, the booster will be super easy to remove and put some where else.

  5. So we actually registered for one from Target and it converts into just the chair portion that you can attach to your dining room chairs when they are ready for that next step. But when they are still in the actual high chair it can be used as a stand alone. I hope the link below works...

  6. I have the high chair that's in your first link and I LOVE IT! It reclines, it folds, it rolls, it has a HUGE basket underneath. The tray can be operated with one hand. I can fit it in our coat closet if I need too, but we have a pretty big dining room. When I was on vacation, my sister let me try her booster-type chair, and I literally couldn't feed Caleb in it. He just couldn't support himself well enough yet. I needed something that could recline. And I love that I can roll it into the kitchen for Caleb to eat finger foods while I wash the dishes.

I figure that some day I'll have a booster seat for bigger kids, and by then I'll need the high chair for another baby.

Right now though, my high chair is literally one of my favorite things that I bought for my baby. I love it!

  7. We did a graco one that folds up. I couldn't stand having to use one of our kitchen chairs as a high chair. I love being able to fold up her high chair and tuck it away.

  8. I vote for the space saver booster chairs. I am always wired to look for ways to save space. They will be in there constantly - think about what suits you best, not guests. Besides, when guests do show up, it looks like you can always remove them and they could even sit in it on the floor or table, etc. I think after awhile you'd get tired of looking at two big highchairs and maneuvering around them. So long as the tray is completely removeable to wash, you're good!

  9. One more thing--the absolute very best thing about the baby trend high chair that you linked first: the tray. It has a portion that snaps off completely that fits in the sink so you can wash and scrub it with soap and water. A-MAZING.

Oh, and I got mine at Burlington Coat Factory. I don't remember if it was cheaper there, but I do know that it's generally more affordable than most of the Babies 'R' Us ones. And the pattern is so cute. Mine has a monkey and a zebra on it.

  10. We got one of each handed down to us. I use the highchair for now. I think I chose to use it just b/c it looks more comfy/more tray space. And I LOVE those little feet in that picture! Baby feet are the best.

  11. We got the one that straps onto the chair and have really liked it. I think we have the same one you linked to and it's great because the seat reclines at nearly any angle you want and you can adjust the tray table to the same angle. It hasn't been a big deal to clean. I like that it takes up less space because we have nowhere to put a stand alone high chair. I figure that when company comes over, we'll pull out some cheap folding chairs and no one will really care. Hope this helps!
