Meteor Crater

Our other stop on our drive down to Mesa was to Meteor Crater. It was mighty overpriced but still pretty cool. There was once debate whether the crater was formed by a volcano or a meteor. You can guess by the name where the evidence pointed!

Before you go out to the crater, there's a whole museum talking about the different studies done on the rock and the drilling expeditions. After hours in the car, may as well stretch out while watching a film!

You can't go down into the crater but there's these nice telescopes aimed at points of interest.

Daniel Barringer guessed that the crater had meteoric origins and tried drilling for iron. He did find pieces of meteor but the biggest ever recovered was about three feet long. Helpful for science, not so helpful for his iron business.

There's another telescope up higher! Let's go!
